Dedham Manufacturing Company (first) is built.

1815

It is located at today’s 1576 – 1608 River Street in Readville. Founded in 1814 by Aaron and Charles Davis, Samuel Dexter, David Greenough, John Grew, John Guild, and James Richardson, the company operates in a wood-frame mill that is the third oldest textile mill in the U.S., after those built by the Cabots in Beverly (est. 1788) and Samuel Slater in Pawtucket, R.I. (est. 1790). Initially only carding and spinning are done in the factory, while weaving is done in local homes. A power loom is added in 1817. The building is subsequently destroyed by fire and replaced by a new, brick building (second) in 1867.* The company comes to be known as the Readville Cotton-Mill, Smithfield Manufacturing Company, and B.B. & R. Cotton Mill.
